Alpaca mares are fertile for about 20 years.

The average gestation period is 345 days or 50 weeks. Multiple births rarely occur. A mare can be serviced two weeks after the birth of her foal.

An interesting fact: An alpaca stallion will ‘orgle’ (make a singing sound) when he wants to mate. He does this to get the mare ‘in the mood’.
