The natural habitat of the Alpaca is the high plains of Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Peru. There are around 3 million alpacas in South America.
The average lifespan of an alpaca is 25 years. In South America, these animals are bred for their superb quality fibre, which is used to make woolly caps, sweaters, scarves, ponchos and much more. These animals have now been domesticated for thousands of years.
Alpacas are perfect herd animals. You can keep about 30 to 35 animals on one hectare of land. Alpacas are elegant, inquisitive, intelligent and... sweet. And, as opposed to their cousins, the llamas – they don’t spit.
